Dublin Bay for centuries shipping was experiencing great difficulty entering Dublin Bay. In 1801 Capt. William Bligh, of Mutiny on the Bounty fame, was commissioned to solve this situation.
Bligh was a skilled cartographer and produced a detailed report together with a beautifully executed map. In 1818 work commenced on the building of a new pier that extended some 3,200 yards into the sea from Dollymount to reach the island. The stone used in the construction was ferried across Dublin Bay by barge from Dalkey. As a direct result of this Bligh’s intervention we now have in Dublin Bay a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve as sediment has moved and created a unique area of natural beauty, it is thought that some 40,000 birds, of many species, winter on the island. Many of these birds migrate here from the Arctic in early November and remain here until April
James Joyce set much of the action in his novel Ulysses round Dublin bay, from the Forty Foot bathing place in which the character Buck Mulligan washed on Bloomsday morning to Howth, where Leopold Bloom made love to his wife Molly under the rhododendrons.
